CHAPTER 12

At the stroke of midnight my horns vanished along with my fur, leaving me naked on Luke’s entryway floor. Hera’s spell had stolen my clothes. Not cool. Those boots were pricey. I’d splurged on good hiking boots when I was still married to Chaz. Later, we’d fought about the boots. He was livid. According to Chaz, I should have spent the money spoiling his mother on Mother’s Day. No mention of my mother. Or the fact that I was juggling three jobs while he worked precisely zero jobs whatsoever.

Alone in the house, I prowled through Luke’s home and located the bedroom. From the outside his home was quaint. Inside, it was clean and functional. He’d spared every expense decorating and only owned a few basic items of good furniture. Big comfortable pieces for men who enjoyed kicking back and passing out at the end of a workday. Back when we’d been a thing, Luke lived in a tiny apartment with a roommate and cheap, flimsy furniture. One night we broke his bed, so he tossed the frame and left the mattress on the floor. Now he owned a solid bed that looked like it could take a whole lot of hammering.

There was no female presence—besides yours truly—except the icon stand in the small foyer. The collection of religious imagery and figurines had to be his grandmother’s doing. Twenty-five-year-old Luke had claimed to believe in God, but he didn’t feel the need to show-off about it. His faith was personal-sized. His Sunday jaunts to church with his grandmother were to please her, not to see and be seen.

Luke’s closet was a shallow walk-in, and he’d placed the dresser inside. I opened the drawers one at a time, mostly out of the desire to clothe myself before I wandered into the dark streets of Salem, and partly out of curiosity. Everything smelled like him. I tried not to sniff stuff because that was weird. What if he had one of those nanny cams in his room? I wouldn’t put it past him to keep an eye out for mythological beings that wanted to kill him, under the circumstances.

I located a black t-shirt and gym shorts with a drawstring, and thanked my genetics for the moderately flat chest, seeing as how Hera had also stolen my undies and bra. At the bottom of the closet I found gym slides that were too big but would have to suffice.

Lamenting the loss of my boots, I locked the door behind me and set off for home on foot.
